Community service awards made to Pearl-area leaders

SadieCommunity leaders in five areas of service were honored June 2 when Pearl Rotary staged its third annual vision awards breakfast. Vocational Service Director Matt Mahaffy joined President Tracy Vicario in orchestrating the breakfast. Commendations were given in the broad areas of: • Business–Barre3 owners Sadie and Chris Lincoln (above, left, while serving also as the main speakers) Payton• Education–Lincoln High School Principal Peyton Chapman (right, also an honorary Pearl Rotarian) • Environment–Spencer Beebe, chair, Ecotrust • Arts–Chris Coleman, artistic director, Portland Center Stage • Community development–Tiffany Sweitzer, president, Hoyt Properties Unforeseen circumstances prevented three of the awardees from attending. But both the husband-wife fitness entrepreneurs and Pearl Rotary’s favorite school administrator were beaming as they stood before Rotarians. Sadie Lincoln summarized their company’s success (Barre 3 is now in 90 locations and reaches 20,000 participants each week); in great part that’s based on focusing on healthful living, education and nutrition. The Lincolns have tried to “un-brainwash” the fitness industry which they believe is far too formulaic and concentrated on one-hour gym sessions. “It’s not what happens in those sixty minutes that make you healthy. It’s what you learn…it’s what you do in the other 23 hours of the day.” Chapman actively seeks outreach activities in Lincoln’s area of Portland that includes the business community, higher education and volunteer partners like Pearl Rotary. “Schools today can’t be stand-alone communities,” she said. “…I feel very fortunate to have purposeful work in my community.”
